More than 1,000 homes across Cumbria were plunged into darkness overnight after Storm Amy unleashed fierce winds and torrential rain across the region.
SP Energy Networks confirmed the severe storm caused widespread damage to overhead power lines, with the Penrith area among the worst affected.

The aftermath left families without electricity as engineers rushed to repair the faults caused during what was described as “a very blustery night.”
“We’ve got our teams out, we’ve got all of our resources available deployed now this morning, and we’re doing our best to get people back on as quickly as we can,” Jonny Morgan, SP Electricity North West
Engineers Working Around the Clock
Jonny Morgan from SP Electricity North West assured the public that crews had been dispatched from Lancashire and Greater Manchester to support local teams in restoring the supply.
“It was hoped all faults reported would be restored by 20:00 BST,” Morgan added.
Repair efforts are ongoing, with engineers working under challenging conditions as gusty winds persist through the weekend.
Storm Amy has not only affected power lines but also disrupted travel across Cumbria. On Friday night, the River Duddon burst its banks, spilling onto the A595 north of Millom, one of the area’s key routes.
Drivers faced treacherous conditions, with floodwater making stretches of the road nearly impassable.

Storm Amy isn’t just a weather event; it’s a full-blown disruptor. From power outages in over 1,000 homes to major roads under water, life in Cumbria has been turned upside down overnight.
With gusts still battering the region and flood risks remaining high, local authorities are urging residents to stay cautious. Travel only if necessary, keep emergency kits ready, and report downed power lines immediately.
The Met Office has issued further weather warnings as parts of the UK brace for continued storms through the weekend. While the worst of Storm Amy may be passing, its ripple effects are expected to linger.
