Mystery Surrounds Death of Trey Reed at Mississippi University Campus
A sense of shock and sadness hangs over Delta State University after the body of student Demartravion “Trey” Reed was found hanging from a tree at the heart of the campus on Monday morning.
The university, located in the Mississippi Delta, has been plunged into mourning as authorities investigate the tragic discovery.
Mike Peeler, the university’s Director of Public Safety, confirmed the incident, saying: “University Police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a Black male hanging from a tree (at) central campus near the DSU pickleball course.”
He went on to express the university’s sorrow: “Delta State University is deeply saddened to confirm the discovery of the deceased individual on our campus this morning.”
The body was linked to 21-year-old Trey Reed, a pupil whose early death has left numerous people struggling with grief and unbelief.
Bolivar County’s Deputy Coroner, Murray Roark, revealed he’d examined the scene but found no broken bones.
“I don’t think I should probably discuss this any further than that. My opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that,” Roark told the Mississippi Free Press.
No Lockdown, No doubt of Foul Play
Despite the grim circumstances, officers have been quick to assure scholars and staff that the lot remains safe. There was no lockdown assessed, and authorities aren’t pursuing foul play as a cause at this stage.
Demartravion “Trey” Reed was lynched & cops say “no foul play.” A Black man hanging in 2025 isn’t an accident. Days after white men marched to “fight back” for Charlie Kirk, Black folks are hunted again. America is rotting. Don’t let them gaslight us. pic.twitter.com/UdDhhFzPNt

Peeler offered further comfort: “I just want to confirm, this is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be.” “It’s just unfortunate that this loss comes heavily to our campus.”
Anniversary Celebrations Postponed
In light of the tragedy, the university has cancelled classes and all centenary fests that were set to begin on Monday in the autumn.
These events will remain suspended until further notice, as the lot grapples with the emotional fallout.
University president Daniel Ennis addressed the community, saying: “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to all those impacted by Trey’s loss.”
He further appealed for patience and understanding: “The university will share updates when appropriate. We ask for your compassion and patience during this difficult time.”
Support and Investigation Underway
A prayer service for Trey Reed is being arranged, and the Lena Sillers Chapel has been opened for all those wishing to offer their prayers and support.
Meanwhile, Delta State University has requested the backing of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, along with other law enforcement agencies, to look into the circumstances surrounding Reed’s death.
As the disquisition unfolds, scholars, faculty, and families are left searching for answers while coming together in grief.
