A suspected arson attack has caused significant damage to the constituency office of Labour MP Sharon Hodgson in Washington, Tyne and Wear, sparking a major police investigation and widespread condemnation from across Westminster.
Office Devastated Overnight
The overnight blaze left Vermont House home to Hodgson’s local office gutted, with the roof completely destroyed. Shocking photos circulating online show a charred and blackened shell of the building, a scene that has shaken both the local community and Parliament alike.
What’s particularly disturbing is the graffiti daubed on the side of the scorched building, reading:
“328 days blood on your hands.”
This chilling message has added a sinister undertone to the suspected arson, although its meaning remains unclear at this stage.
“An incident occurred overnight at Sharon’s office. We will not be commenting or speculating while there is an ongoing police investigation; what we are clear on is there is no place for this kind of violence in our society.
Sharon will not be deterred and will continue to support her constituents in Washington and Gateshead South as she does day in, day out. Constituents should get in touch with their issues by emailing in the usual way.” Spokesperson for MP Sharon Hodgson
Growing Concern for MP Safety
In Parliament on Thursday morning, fellow Labour MP Andy McDonald raised the matter during Commons proceedings, stating: “I’m sure I speak for the whole house in sending our best wishes to our colleague in Washington and Gateshead South for the appalling fire at her office overnight, and send our very best wishes to her and her staff.”
His words were echoed by Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty, who was visibly shocked to learn of the incident during the session.
“I wasn’t aware of the terrible instance he referred to this morning. I’ve just been informed and I’m sure the thoughts of the whole house will be with our colleague.”
He added: “I think particularly in light of international events, and the tragic loss of colleagues, this all the more underlines why we must have security and safety to go about democratic debate in this country, whatever our views, in a safe and secure way.”
This attack comes amid rising political tensions in the UK and abroad. While motives remain unconfirmed, the symbolic nature of the graffiti and targeted location suggest an act meant to instil fear.
Such violence, many MPs argue, threatens not just individuals—but democracy itself.
Local Police: Investigation Underway
Northumbria Police have confirmed they are treating the fire as a suspected arson and are appealing for witnesses and CCTV footage. No arrests have been made so far. Officers remain on the scene, examining debris and speaking with potential witnesses.
Although the building is severely damaged, thankfully, no injuries were reported.
A Stark Reminder
This disturbing act follows a string of rising security concerns faced by public officials. With the memories of violent incidents against MPs still raw in the public’s mind, calls for enhanced protection measures have intensified.
In recent years, MPs across the political spectrum have reported threats, abuse, and even physical violence, prompting a nationwide reassessment of the safety protocols in place for elected representatives.
Sharon Hodgson, who has served as MP for Washington and Gateshead South since 2005, is known for her steadfast support of constituents and her active engagement in Parliament.
Her office has assured the public that she remains committed to her role and that her constituency work will continue without interruption.
As the investigation continues, both the community and colleagues across Westminster are standing firmly by Hodgson’s side.
