A dramatic police operation unfolded in Margate on Wednesday evening as multiple streets were evacuated following the discovery of suspicious items inside a residential flat. A man has since been arrested, and an explosive ordnance team remains on site.
Police Rush to Scene Following Alarming Report
The incident kicked off just after 4pm when Kent Police received a call regarding concerning items located inside a property on Rosedale Road.
Officers acted swiftly, evacuating residents from the building and three surrounding streets: Glencoe Road, Wharfedale Road, and Malham Drive.
A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed: “One person has been arrested and taken into custody in connection with the incidents.”
Bomb Squad and Emergency Crews on Standby
In response to the potential threat, a specialised Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from the Ministry of Defence was deployed.
A safety cordon was swiftly established around the affected area. Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene as a precaution.
Residents described the sight of emergency vehicles and flashing lights as “something out of a film”, with taped-off streets and dozens of officers swarming the area.
Footage quickly surfaced on social media, showing rows of police cars, emergency tape, and large groups of displaced locals gathered nearby, anxiously waiting for updates.
Temporary Shelter Set Up for Evacuated Residents
With dozens of families forced from their homes, Thanet District Council stepped in to provide emergency support. Displaced residents were advised to head to Hartsdown Leisure Centre, where food, shelter, and assistance were being offered.
Thanet Councillor Jack Packman addressed the situation directly: “If you have family or friends you can stay with for the short term, you are advised to do so.
However, if this is not possible, Thanet District Council has set up an evacuation point at Hartsdown Leisure Centre, where support and assistance are available.”
Councillor Packman also urged calm in the community: “Police are still investigating the incident and there is no cause for concern at this stage.”
Investigation Continues as Community Waits for Answers
As of late Wednesday night, police remained on site, and the investigation was still active. No further details have been released about the nature of the suspicious items.
The situation has sparked widespread speculation among residents, but officials are urging the public not to panic or spread misinformation.
