Commuters faced unexpected delays on Monday morning after Westminster Bridge was closed in both directions due to a police incident involving emergency services.
Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, were seen parked across the bridge during the peak of the rush hour. A visible police cordon blocked all access, prompting detours and frustrating detours for those trying to cross the Thames.
Emergency Services Respond to Mental Health Concern
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident was mental health-related, reassuring the public that no injuries had been reported.
The AA reported that the closure started around 4:07am, affecting traffic flows between Victoria Embankment (A3211) and Lambeth Palace Road. Despite the disruption, “Traffic is coping well,” according to their latest updates.

the AA added.
Commuters Share Their Frustration Online
The closure triggered a wave of complaints on social media, as people scrambled to reroute their morning commute. Many expressed their annoyance at being forced into lengthy detours, especially those unfamiliar with alternative routes.
“Westminster Bridge being closed is a real pain for this humble commuter,” one user posted, saying they had to cross Lambeth Bridge on foot after their bus was diverted.
“Great start to the morning. Came out of the Westminster tube to walk over the bridge to get to work,” another wrote.
“Bridge closed, taped off. One ambulance on the bridge. Police refused to let me cross the bridge inspite of showing my pass. Long detour over Lambeth. Not a happy bunny.”
Bus Routes Affected, But No Gridlock
A total of 12 bus routes were placed on diversion, though major congestion was largely avoided thanks to early morning traffic management. Transport services confirmed that detours were already in place to reduce delays.
Thousands of commuters were caught off guard by the sudden bridge closure, with many calling for improved communication in future emergency responses. While the incident did not result in injuries, it highlighted the vulnerability of key routes like Westminster Bridge during peak hours.
As of late morning, authorities were yet to confirm when the bridge would fully reopen. The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for further comment.
