The family of 14-year-old Layton Carr have paid tribute to their “bright and beautiful boy” following a devastating fire at Fairfield Industrial Park in Gateshead, which claimed the teenager’s life.
The blaze, which erupted on Friday evening at a disused building in the Bill Quay area, shocked the local community and prompted a major emergency response.
Community mourns 14-year-old Layton Carr after fatal Gateshead fire
Emergency services were called to the scene just after 7:50pm. Firefighters described encountering a “severe fire within a section of one of the buildings” on the derelict estate.
A spokesperson from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “As a result of the fire, sadly, a person we believe to be 14-year-old Layton Carr was found deceased by our firefighters.”
The fire was brought under control just before midnight. The site, part of a largely abandoned industrial complex, has fallen into significant disrepair in recent years.
Sixteen children arrested and bailed
In connection with the incident, police arrested 16 children—eleven boys and three girls aged between 11 and 14, followed by two additional boys aged 12—on suspicion of manslaughter. All have since been released on bail.
An investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire and Layton’s tragic death.
Layton’s family released a poignant tribute, along with a photograph of the smiling teen. “Layton was your typical 14-year-old lad, a cheeky, happy lad. Despite his cheeky side Layton had an absolute heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.”
They added: “He was loved by all that met him, and it showed. He was a family boy that loved his mam and sisters more than anything in the world. Layton, we love you more than any words can ever explain. You will be missed more than you’ll ever know. Our bright and beautiful boy.”
Outpouring of grief across the community
The local community has rallied around Layton’s family, with flowers and tributes laid at the site of the fire. A GoFundMe campaign launched in support of his mother has already raised over £18,000.
Friends, classmates, and neighbours continue to express their sorrow. Layton’s friend Mason, also 14, visited the scene with his mother and shared his grief with reporters.
“He was just the most positive person I ever knew. Even if no one else was by my side, and it didn’t matter if I was scared or he was, he was always there to back me or protect me, or anything. I just can’t believe he’s gone,” Mason said.
Hebburn Comprehensive School, where Layton was a Year 9 student, has also spoken of the deep impact of his death.
Headteacher David Thompson said: “Our school community is heartbroken. Layton was a valued and much-loved member of Year 9, and he will be greatly missed by everyone. As a school, we will rally together to support one another.”
Police urge public not to speculate
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins urged members of the public to avoid speculation, especially online.
“Our thoughts remain with Layton’s family at this devastating time. I would remind everyone not to speculate on details of the incident online or in the community – what might seem like a simple post on social media could disrupt an ongoing investigation,” she said.
She also issued a warning: “Circulation of malicious communications is classed as a criminal offence and those who choose to be involved could face prosecution.”
Northumbria Police continue to appeal for any information that may help their inquiry. The tragic death of Layton Carr has left a lasting mark on Gateshead, with a community now united in grief and support for his heartbroken family.
