A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Co. Kerry farmer Michael Gaine, whose disappearance sparked a major investigation earlier this year.
The 56-year-old was last seen in Kenmare on Thursday, 20 March, before being reported missing the following day. The case took a grim turn when gardaí confirmed on Saturday that human remains had been found on Mr Gaine’s property.
Investigation Upgraded to Homicide
On 29 April, the missing persons case was officially upgraded to a homicide investigation. Details on that development can be found in the report on the homicide investigation into missing Kerry farmer Michael Gaine.
Since the reclassification, officers have carried out extensive searches at lands in Carrig East, near Kenmare. Their efforts led to the discovery of remains believed to be Mr Gaine. Forensic teams have continued examining the site throughout the weekend.
Arrest Made
A Garda spokesperson confirmed the arrest on Saturday. “The male is being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in Kerry Division.
