Greggs Opens First-Ever Pub in Newcastle, Pasties Meet Pints at The Golden Flake Tavern
Beloved high-street bakery Greggs is stepping into uncharted territory, swapping sausage roll counters for beer taps with the launch of its very first pub.
This weekend marks the grand unveiling of The Golden Flake Tavern, a limited-time Greggs pub inside Fenwick’s department store at Eldon Square, Newcastle.
Running for five months only, the venue promises a bold twist on the classic British pub experience – with Greggs fans set to enjoy pints alongside their favourite bakes.
Doors swing open on Saturday, 27 September, and excitement is brewing. Seats are limited to just 88 guests at a time, so reserving ahead is strongly advised. Walk- sways are welcome too, but anticipate ranges as locals and callers rush to snare a table.
Pints, Pasties, and Playful Menus
Forget ordinary pub grub. The Golden Flake Tavern serves a Greggs-inspired 15-dish menu that brings bakery favourites into hearty, pub-style meals.
Think chicken bake parmo, steak bake mixed grill, sausage roll and mash, or a Greggs ploughman’s platter.
Dessert lovers aren’t left behind, with indulgent creations such as yum yum bread and butter pudding, pink jammie trifle, and doughnut pieces layered with jelly, jam, custard, and whipped cream.

Beer drinkers can toast the occasion with two exclusive draft brews, the Pink Jammie Pale Ale and the Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager, crafted in collaboration with Newcastle’s Full Circle Brew Co.
For those steering clear of beer, Greggs-inspired cocktails add a playful twist to the drinks list.
Sunday visitors can even tuck into a reimagined Greggs Sunday roast, complete with steak, chicken or cheese-and-onion bakes served alongside cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings.
More Than Just a Pub
Keeping with true pub tradition, quiz nights will run every Tuesday from 7 October, with tickets priced at £5. But don’t dawdle, The Golden Flake Tavern will close its doors on 15 February, making this a fleeting but flavour-packed experience.
Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs, said: “Following the reaction and success of our previous collaborations with Fenwick, Bistro by Greggs in 2023 and the Greggs Champagne Bar last year, we’re thrilled to be launching our third landmark venture together.
“The Golden Flake Tavern brings a fresh twist to the traditional British pub experience, and we hope everyone who joined us before, along with many new faces, will come along to enjoy this unique Greggs experience.”
Leo Fenwick, Fenwick strategic hookups director, added, “ This recent collaboration celebrates the style of both brands, pairing Greggs’ much-loved classics with our own distinctive approach to creating memorable in-store gestures.
“As two North East icons, we’re proud to work together again in offering customers something playful, surprising and truly unique in the heart of Newcastle.”
The launch has already sparked a nationwide buzz, with Greggs enthusiasts eager to see if the Greggs pub concept could expand beyond Newcastle.
For now, though, The Golden Flake Tavern remains a one-off, celebrating two of the North East’s most recognisable names in a truly British fashion, with bakes, beers, and plenty of banter.
Book early. Bring your mates. And don’t forget the Pink Jammie Pale Ale. This is Greggs like you’ve never seen it before.
