Google Turns 27: Tech Giant Celebrates with Nostalgic First Logo
Google is 27 today. And it’s marking the milestone in style. Its homepage features the company’s very first logo, a nod to its origins in 1998.
For anyone visiting the search engine today, the homepage is a flashback. The old-school letters are chunky, colourful, and delightfully imperfect.
“It’s a reminder that even the world’s most powerful companies often start with modest, imperfect beginnings,” the company said in a blog post.
From Garage Project to Global Powerhouse
Google’s journey began humbly in a garage in Menlo Park, California. Two Stanford PhD students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were behind the project.
Their mission? “To organise the web’s overwhelming information and make it accessible to everyone.”
Back then, Google was barely noticed outside academic circles. Today, it dominates daily life worldwide.
Beyond search, Google now operates Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Android, cloud services, and leading AI innovations.
Why September 27?
Technically, Google’s birthday is 4 September 1998, when it filed incorporation papers. But over the years, September 27 became the “official” celebration. The date stuck after Google used it for one of its early birthday doodles.

Think of it as a “party birthday.” The fun matters more than paperwork.
The First Logo Makes a Comeback
The doodle revives Google’s original 1998 logo. It’s basic, but full of character. A reminder that big things often start small.
“That first logo represented a vision, not the polished tech empire we see today, but a work in progress filled with ambition,” Google reflected.
At 27, Google is as ambitious as ever. Its focus on AI, cloud computing, and smart devices signals that the company isn’t slowing down. Yet, for today, it’s all about nostalgia.
From a modest garage to a global tech empire, Google’s colourful beginnings remain an inspiration. And today, its old logo is proof that even the biggest dreams start small.
