First Look at David Tennant in Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club as Full Trailer Drops
The first full trailer for Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club has finally arrived, giving audiences a long-awaited peek at David Tennant as Ian Ventham, and it’s already stirring plenty of excitement.
The star-studded murder mystery, adapted from Richard Osman’s bestselling novel, has brought together a glittering cast of British acting royalty. We see Oscar-winner Dame Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Sir Jonathan Pryce joining forces on-screen.
Directed by Chris Columbus, the filmmaker behind Harry Potter favourites, the film centres around a group of sharp-witted retirees who find themselves knee-deep in crime-solving at Coopers Chase retirement village.
In the story, Tennant, 54, plays Ian Ventham, the wealthy but shady owner of the village. Pryce, 78, portrays Stephen, husband to Mirren’s character Elizabeth, and a man battling dementia.
The newly released trailer wastes no time showing Tennant’s flair for drama. Slicked-back hair. Designer Dolce & Gabbana T-shirt. A glare that could cut glass. And in one moment, a line that’s bound to raise a smile: “I’m not worried about the cantankerous old farts.”
Alongside them, Saltburn’s Richard E. Grant, Miranda star Tom Ellis, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes round out the cast. Fans also get a glimpse of Imrie’s Joyce being welcomed into the quirky sleuthing circle by Elizabeth, Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Ron (Brosnan).
Ackie’s police constable and Mays’ fellow officer lay down the law, with Mays pointedly remarking: “Police work is off-limits to anyone who isn’t the police.” But this is The Thursday Murder Club; rules were made to be bent.
Tension crackles as the trailer shows Elizabeth receiving a sinister bouquet warning her to “back off” and later being confronted by a shadowy stranger who hisses: “Don’t wake the dead.”
Columbus has been effusive about the ensemble, calling them the most prepared and versatile cast he’s worked with since the Harry Potter days: “They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”
Richard Osman, who stepped away from hosting BBC’s Pointless in 2022 to focus on writing, has already delivered four novels in the series. A fifth, The Impossible Fortune, is due this September.
With its mix of dry wit, suspense, and undeniable star power, The Thursday Murder Club is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s big summer hits. Mark the date — the mystery lands on 28 August.
