David Letterman has spoken out in support of Seth Meyers after US President Donald Trump launched fresh attacks on the Late Night host, even calling for NBC to remove him from the programme.
Letterman appeared on The Barbra Gaines Show, where he responded to Trump’s remarks with characteristic dry humour. With a wry smile, the late-night veteran quipped, “This is just delightful. How do you think that’s going to go?”
Reflecting on his years hosting Late Night before moving to CBS, Letterman praised Meyers warmly and said, “[Meyers] does a magical job.” He then added a tongue-in-cheek warning: “But just remember, Seth, things happen. You know what I’m saying?”
Trump’s Criticism and Seth Meyers’ Response
Earlier this month, Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, accusing Meyers of suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and questioning his comedic ability.
The post was shared by Brendan Carr, chairman of the FCC, who previously caused headlines by threatening ABC, pressure that led to Jimmy Kimmel’s brief suspension.
Meyers responded with humour on his show, joking about being added to Trump’s growing list of enemies, which includes politicians, media figures, and others who have criticised him.
He even acknowledged Trump’s right to dislike the show, saying, “That is his right, and on a lot of nights, he’s got a point.”
Letterman’s Defence of Late-Night Comedy
Letterman’s support for Meyers aligns with his long-standing criticism of Trump, whom he has previously described as “our dictator” and labelled his administration a “wonder of idiocy.”
He condemned any attempts to silence late-night hosts, particularly in light of the Kimmel controversy, warning that firing someone out of fear of an “authoritarian criminal administration” would be shameful.
David Letterman goes on a bizarre rant against President Trump and calls him an idiot, a dictator and fraudulent.

He also reflected on the end of his own CBS show, calling the network’s decision “gutless” and an example of “pure cowardice.”
While CBS claims the cancellation was financial, speculation remains that political pressure played a role, especially during merger talks involving Paramount and Skydance.
The Ongoing Clash Between Comedy and Politics
As the tension between political figures and late-night comedians continues, the divide between satire and authority shows no signs of narrowing.
Whether Trump’s attacks will have any lasting impact on Meyers or the networks that host him remains uncertain. For now, Letterman’s backing serves as a clear reminder that late-night comedy intends to stand its ground.
