Blues Left Baffled as Donald Trump Steals Spotlight at Club World Cup Ceremony
Chelsea Trump drama took centre stage at the Club World Cup final as Donald Trump’s unexpected role in the trophy presentation left both players and fans scratching their heads.
After Chelsea’s stunning 3-0 dismantling of PSG in the final — a night already brimming with emotion and history — the post-match celebrations took a surreal turn.
The Blues were moments away from lifting their first-ever revamped Club World Cup trophy when former US president Donald Trump emerged alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
At first, it seemed like a formal cameo. Trump helped hand over the silverware to captain Reece James. But then, things got strange.
Rather than stepping aside like Infantino, Trump remained awkwardly rooted on stage, looming in frame as Chelsea’s stars tried to celebrate around him. Cameras flashed. Confused glances were exchanged.
James explained the moment, albeit through the chaos: “To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn’t hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
Young star Cole Palmer, who netted two and assisted the other in Chelsea’s victory, looked visibly stunned during the ceremony. “I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy,” he said. “I was a bit confused, yeah.”
Levi Colwill echoed the disbelief. “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.”
And stay he did — even as boos rang out across the stadium. The jeers, loud and clear, came from a largely European crowd in the United States, many of whom appeared less than thrilled to see Trump at centre stage.
Adding another bizarre layer to the night, Trump’s appearance coincided with the anniversary of the assassination attempt he survived in 2024 during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania — an incident that continues to polarise public opinion.
None of that, however, seemed to faze the Chelsea squad on the pitch. They had just toppled a dominant PSG outfit to make history under Enzo Maresca’s leadership. The win was not only emphatic, but symbolic — a new era for the Blues, capped off in surreal fashion.
A night to remember? Absolutely. But one thing’s for sure: Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph will be remembered for more than just football.
