British Gas support: Urgent £300 Help Available for Struggling Households – Act Now
Families across the UK are being urged to act fast as new financial support becomes available — with some households eligible for up to £300.
The Household Support Fund (HSF), a lifeline aimed at helping with essential bills, is once again open for applications. But many are still unaware they qualify.
The scheme, funded by the UK government and distributed by local councils, is not tied to Universal Credit or other benefits. If you’re with British Gas, Octopus, Eon, EDF, or OVO, and you’re finding it hard to stay on top of rising energy costs — now’s the time to check if help is on offer.
Each council sets its own rules. Payouts vary. For instance, Doncaster Council is handing out up to £300, while Birmingham City Council is offering £200. Others may provide meal vouchers, council tax discounts, or even household appliances.
Some schemes are already winding down for the summer. That means the clock is ticking.
Fiona Peake, personal finance expert at Ocean Finance, said: “Families are missing out because they don’t realise they’re eligible, but this fund is for anyone who is having a tough time – people who are working hard, juggling the bills and still finding there’s not enough left at the end of the month.
“In many cases, they don’t need to be on Universal Credit or any other benefit to apply.”
“The schemes are different depending on where you live, and some are already closing for the summer, so don’t hang about.”
Some households could receive additional help. “Doncaster Council, for example, is offering £300 to households with three or more kids. Families with two children can get £200. If you have one child, it’s £100.
Some households can get an extra £100 towards their energy bills if they receive council tax support, housing benefit or free school meals,” Peake explained.
In Manchester, a payment of £130 is available for those receiving council tax support and disability benefits like PIP or DLA.
There’s more.
Some areas are distributing grocery vouchers, help with energy arrears, or even kitchen essentials like air fryers and microwaves.
The catch? You have to apply. And the earlier, the better.
Local councils assess need on a case-by-case basis. Those facing the most severe financial pressure will be prioritised.
With rising living costs, this support could ease the burden for thousands — but only if they know to ask.
So, whether you’re with British Gas or another major provider, check your local council’s website today. You could be entitled to much-needed help.
Don’t leave money on the table.
