Footballing World in Mourning After Fatal A-52 Accident in Spain
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, have tragically died in a fiery car crash in northwestern Spain. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning when their Lamborghini lost control on the A-52 near Cernadilla, Zamora, close to the Portuguese border.
According to initial reports, the high-performance vehicle was overtaking another car when a suspected tyre blowout caused it to veer off the road, flip over, and burst into flames at approximately 12:35am.
Devastation Following Wedding Celebration
This heartbreaking incident comes just ten days after 28-year-old Jota tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. The timing of the tragedy has left fans and the football community reeling.
Liverpool FC released a statement expressing their sorrow, stating they were “devastated” by the loss. The club, along with the wider footballing world, is mourning the passing of two talented individuals.
Different Paths, Shared Passion
Both Diogo and Andre began their footballing journeys at FC Porto, rising through the ranks side-by-side. While Jota’s career ascended to international prominence with spells at Atletico Madrid and Wolves before joining Liverpool in a £40 million transfer in 2020, Andre chose a different route.
Andre Silva, 26, remained in Portugal, forging his own career in the lower leagues. For the past five years, he had been a key player for second division outfit Penafiel as an attacking midfielder.
Unlike his older brother, Andre retained their family surname. Diogo adopted “Jota” professionally to avoid confusion with other players named Silva.
It remains unclear whether Andre had a partner or children. However, he maintained a close bond with Diogo, as seen in photos shared during their 2020 holiday.

Penafiel paid tribute on their official website, declaring a period of mourning.
The club said: “Futebol Clube Penafiel expresses its deepest condolences for the tragic death of André Silva and his brother Diogo Jota, victims of a traffic accident that occurred in the last few hours. The loss of two young lives linked to the world of football fills us with pain and consternation.”
Emergency Response Confirmed Fatalities
Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region received several calls shortly after the incident. A statement from regional authorities read: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.
A car was reported to have been involved in an accident, and the vehicle was on fire.”
Medical and rescue teams, including traffic police and firefighters, rushed to the scene. Sadly, both Diogo and Andre were pronounced dead at the site.

National Outpouring of Grief
The Portuguese Football Federation also confirmed the brothers’ deaths. Federation president Pedro Proenca shared an emotional tribute: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain.
“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.”
UEFA has been approached by the Federation to observe a minute of silence before Portugal’s women’s European Championship match against Spain.
The sudden loss of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva is being felt deeply across Portugal and the international football community. Tributes continue to pour in as fans and players alike remember the brothers’ legacy both on and off the pitch.
