Underground train station chaos as fire alert sparks mass evacuation at Clapham Common
A busy morning commute turned chaotic after Clapham Common Underground train station was suddenly evacuated due to a reported fire alert, triggering widespread disruption across the Northern line.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the closure shortly after 10am on Thursday, stating: “Clapham Common station. This station is closed whilst we respond to a fire alert.” Commuters were quickly ushered out of the station, with social media posts showing large crowds spilling onto the pavement outside.
Eyewitness accounts flooded X (formerly Twitter). One commuter described the scene as frantic, while another said: “fire trucks just arrived.” Emergency services were seen arriving at the scene within minutes.
The incident has sparked severe delays on the entire Northern line, with all services between Clapham Common and Morden suspended. No timeline has been given for when normal service will resume. TfL apologised to travellers, adding: “Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
The cause of the fire alert remains unconfirmed, and it is still unclear whether any real danger was detected. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
Meanwhile, the disruption didn’t stop at Clapham Common. The Piccadilly line was also hit, with services suspended between Acton Town and Uxbridge. The Victoria line faced major delays too, following a separate fire alert at Stockwell station.
The series of alerts has left Londoners frustrated, with many forced to reroute or abandon their journeys altogether. Morning travel, already hectic, turned into a logistical nightmare for many.
TfL has yet to release a full statement regarding the scale of the issue or whether today’s events are linked.
