Two men have been formally charged with murder following the tragic death of 19-year-old Liam Derrett, who suffered fatal injuries in a violent street fight murder in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 1 June, in Market Place — a normally quiet area that has now become the centre of a homicide investigation. Derrett sustained severe head injuries and, despite medical efforts, died in hospital two days later, on Tuesday.

The two suspects — Kai Donachie, 23, of Bilborough Road, Nottingham, and Joshua Harris, 24, of Little Hallam Lane, Ilkeston — have been charged with murder. Both men are scheduled to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court later this week.

This street fight murder has shaken the local community, with residents expressing concern over growing violence in the area.

Police also arrested three others in connection with the case:

  • A man aged 19
  • Two women, aged 18 and 19

All three were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have since been released on bail as detectives continue their inquiries.

Police are urging anyone with information about the street fight murder to come forward. A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said, “We believe there may be witnesses who have not yet come forward, and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or who has any footage to contact us immediately.”

The renewed appeal highlights the importance of community support in helping solve such violent crimes. Investigators are particularly interested in any mobile phone or CCTV footage from around the time of the attack.

Residents of Ilkeston have expressed grief and outrage over the incident. Many have taken to social media to remember Liam Derrett, describing him as “full of life” and “a kind-hearted young man.”

Local councillor Sarah Hargreaves said, “This is a devastating loss for the community. Our thoughts are with Liam’s family during this unimaginably difficult time.”

As the investigation continues, the call for justice grows louder. The street fight murder has not only taken a young life but has left a scar on a community that now seeks answers and accountability.

Police maintain that no detail is too small. Anyone who was in the area during the time of the fight, or who may have heard anything suspicious, is urged to contact Derbyshire Constabulary directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers.

The tragic incident serves as a chilling reminder of how quickly violence can escalate. As the case progresses through the courts, the community hopes justice will be served for Liam Derrett.
