As of 31 March 2025, the Metropolitan Police have arrested a woman in her 30s in connection with the tragic discovery of a newborn baby boy found deceased in a Marks & Spencer shopping bag outside All Saints Church in Notting Hill, West London.

The woman, believed to be the child’s mother, was detained on suspicion of concealing a birth, neglect, and infanticide. She is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case and ongoing investigations, authorities have not released further personal details about the arrested woman.

Superintendent Owen Renowden emphasized the priority of ensuring the welfare of all involved and understanding the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.

The Metropolitan Police continue to appeal for any information from the public that may assist in their enquiries. They encourage individuals who were in the vicinity of All Saints Church on 25 March 2025 or who may have relevant information to come forward

Police Continue Investigation as Post-Mortem is Scheduled

The body of the newborn was found in a Marks & Spencer shopping bag outside All Saints Church on Powis Gardens, shortly before 1pm on Monday, 25 March.

Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, responded to the scene and confirmed that the baby had sadly died.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that such arrests are standard in sensitive cases like this to allow for a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for later this week to determine the cause of death. Officers have stated they remain “open-minded” regarding the investigation and are examining all possibilities.

Support and Appeals from Authorities

Superintendent Owen Renowden, who oversees policing for the area, said “This is an ongoing, fast-paced investigation, with officers working tirelessly to ascertain the circumstances of the baby boy’s death.”

He acknowledged the potential impact of the incident on the local community, adding “I recognise that the news of this arrest may cause concern among our community, but when dealing with investigations of this nature our priority is to ensure the welfare of all involved and ensure that all lines of inquiry are fully explored.”

He also confirmed that the arrested woman is currently receiving appropriate medical and psychological support, stating “She is receiving the support she needs while officers continue their work to understand what took place.”

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Information

As enquiries continue, the Metropolitan Police are urging anyone who may have information about the incident or the events leading up to it to come forward.

A cordon remains in place at the scene, and additional officers have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance to residents and assist with the investigation.
