Channel 4’s popular reality series Gogglebox has come under fire from viewers, with fans accusing cast members of displaying exaggerated and ‘forced’ emotional reactions during the most recent episode.
The long-running programme, which captures families and friends across the UK reacting to weekly television highlights, featured a range of shows on Friday night’s episode (28 March). The line-up included popular titles such as Netflix’s Adolescence, ITV’s Coronation Street, and Britain’s Got Talent.
Emotional Response to Musical Tribute Draws Criticism
However, it was the final segment of the episode that stirred the most discussion. The cast were shown the BBC’s Big Night of Musicals – a televised celebration of musical theatre.
One particular performance struck an emotional chord: Vicky McClure’s Our Dementia Choir performed The Impossible Dream by Andy Williams, accompanied by Michael Boe.
Many of the cast members were visibly moved by the performance, some even tearing up. But not all viewers were convinced by the emotional display.

Some of the Gogglebox cast were brought to tears by the performance from the choir, but not everyone was so convinced of their authenticity.
One person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “#Gogglebox Have they been told to UP their reactions! pathetic, what world do these people live in!!”
Another shared similar sentiments, posting: “I’m a very emotional guy, but that didn’t move me one iota. Yet these Goggleboxers are a blubbering mess!”
One viewer was particularly harsh, saying: “Jesus Christ this show [has] gone to the dogs. It used to be funny/entertaining with authentic reactions. Now it’s full of annoying gobs***** playing up to the camera.”
However, not everyone was annoyed by the reactions, as one person wrote: “Wonderful to see the #Dementiachoir on #Gogglebox they all looked so glamorous.”
Another said: “I thought Jenny would cry, but they’re all going! #Gogglebox”.
A third posted: “This dementia choir always gets to me man”.
Meanwhile, some viewers thought Michael Boe stole the limelight a little away from the actual members of the choir during the performance.
One shared: “Exactly what we thought. Not enough choir. #Gogglebox”.
Another wrote: “yea, Micheal Ball really made that about the choir didn’t he????”
Ongoing Debate About Reality TV Authenticity
This isn’t the first time Gogglebox has faced scrutiny over the authenticity of its cast reactions. While the show prides itself on being unscripted and real, moments like these reignite conversations about how much of reality TV is truly organic.
Despite the criticism, Gogglebox remains a fan favourite, with a loyal audience tuning in each week. Whether or not the emotional scenes were genuine, they certainly sparked discussion – a hallmark of successful television.
