Heavy snow and a lorry crash have caused major M1 traffic disruption this morning, with multiple lanes closed and long queues building during the rush hour.

The incident, which happened in the early hours on Friday, January 9, has left drivers facing delays of up to 30 minutes as Storm Goretti continues to bring wintry conditions across parts of the UK.

National Highways has confirmed recovery work is underway, while winter gritters have been sent out to tackle snow settling on the motorway.

What has happened on the M1 today?

The M1 northbound is facing severe disruptions after a lorry crash and heavy snowfall in the early hours of Friday, January 9. The crash occurred between junction 28, Mansfield and junction 29, Chesterfield, forcing the closure of three out of four lanes.

According to National Highways, recovery of the lorry is underway, and winter fleet vehicles are en route to clear the snow that has settled on the motorway.

Drivers are being warned of significant delays, with current congestion extending for four miles.

How is the weather affecting traffic?

The ongoing Storm Goretti is bringing heavy snow to the Midlands and other parts of the UK, compounding travel problems. Snow is settling on the carriageway, slowing vehicles and increasing the risk of further accidents.

National Highways stated: “Winter fleet vehicles are en route to clear the snow, but delays are expected to continue throughout the morning.”

Images from motorway cameras show queues of lorries and cars, highlighting the challenges for drivers during the busy rush hour.

How long are the delays on the M1?

Currently, drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes, according to National Highways. The combination of the lorry crash and snow-covered lanes has reduced traffic flow significantly.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes if possible.

What are National Highways doing to resolve the issue?

Recovery teams are on-site to remove the crashed lorry, while winter service vehicles are working to treat the affected lanes.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “We urge drivers to take extra care, reduce speed, and follow the advice of traffic officers. Safety remains our top priority.”

UK drivers face morning chaos

The snow and crash are causing disruption for commuters and freight drivers alike.

A local delivery driver from Chesterfield told: “It’s taking forever to get through. We’ve been stuck for nearly 20 minutes, and visibility is poor with the snow.”

Similar delays have been reported on other major routes, showing the widespread effect of Storm Goretti across the UK.

What does this mean for UK drivers?

  • Travel times along the M1 are significantly longer during rush hour.
  • Snow and crashes are creating safety hazards, particularly for lorries and high-sided vehicles.
  • Winter fleet interventions are ongoing, but drivers should avoid unnecessary travel and monitor updates.
