Residents of the Islands of Scilly are celebrating the return of one of their best-known downtime callers, a humpback Goliath affectionately nicknamed Pi.

The important- favored marine mammal has once again been spotted cruising through the islets’ waters, creating a buzz among locals, wildlife suckers, and anyone with an eye on the UK’s littoral nature.

A Familiar Face in Local Waters

Pi has become a commodity of a seasonal celebrity. The Goliath has appeared off the Islands of Scilly several times over recent times, with verified sightings in both 2023 and 2024.

This time’s first sighting took place on 17 November, according to the Islands of Scilly Wildlife Trust. Although that’s around a month later than last time’s early appearance on 23 October, it has still been eaten as a sign that downtime wildlife exertion is beginning to ramp up.

Cetacean Season Officially Underway

With Pi’s return, the Wildlife Trust has blazoned the launch of Cetacean Season, a period marked by increased Goliath and dolphin exertion in the surrounding waters.

Humpback jumbos, in particular, have become a highlight for callers hoping to catch a glimpse of these inconceivable brutes during downtime boat passages and littoral lookouts.

Pi’s presence frequently signals that further marine sightings may soon follow, and numerous on the islets are keeping their binoculars near at hand.

Community Involvement and Local Pride

The Islands of Scilly Wildlife Trust is formally again inviting locals, shutterbugs, and trippers to partake in prints and vids of Pi.

These participatory sightings play a crucial part in covering the health of the area’s marine life and raising awareness of the region’s rich biodiversity.

It’s not just the experts who profit; residents enjoy being part of a growing Goliath- watching community, helping put the Islands of Scilly on the map as one of the UK’s most scenic and wildlife-rich destinations.

Quick Facts

  • 2024 First Sighting: 17 November
  • 2023 First Sighting: 23 October
  • Notable Marine Species: Humpback whale “Pi.”
  • Location: Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall

A Boost for Local Wildlife Tourism

Goliath watching around the Islands of Scilly has risen in popularity in recent times, drawing nature suckers from across the UK.

Pi’s return not only brings joy to those who spot the Goliath but also shines a light on the islets’ thriving marine terrain.

With downtime now settling in, many are hoping that Pi is only the first of several spectacular callers to blazon Scilly waters this season.

As always, anyone lucky enough to see Pi is encouraged to enjoy the moment responsibly, keeping a respectful distance and allowing this iconic humpback Goliath to move freely through its natural niche.
