Residents along the River Wye have been put on alert as high runs are expected to spark flooding across the corridor of Gloucestershire and neighbouring Wales.

The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Alert covering areas from Coleford in the valley of the Dean to Chepstow.

Officials warn that low-lying communities and roads near the Wye Estuary could be particularly vulnerable. “Residents should prepare for potential flooding,” the alert reads.

When Flooding Could Strike

Flood pitfalls are anticipated to peak late on Friday evening, November 7, extending into the morning of Saturday, November 8.

Flooding is expected to start at roughly 8 PM on Friday, continuing until 8 AM on Saturday.

Tidal Peaks to Watch

The Environment Agency has shared projected tide levels:

Avonmouth Portbury:

  • Friday: 7.4m to 7.7m
  • Saturday: 7.3m to 7.6m

Newport:

  • Friday: 6.9m to 7.2m
  • Saturday: 6.8m to 7.1m

Authorities stress that low-lying land and roads, particularly from Redbrook to Chepstow, are at risk. Drivers and climbers are prompted to avoid flood tide waters entirely.

Weather Update

The Met Office forecasts heavy rain across the timber of Dean on Friday, tapering off by 6 PM, with lighter showers until 8 PM. Saturday should see a brighter outlook with sunny spells, although Sunday may bring haphazard rain later in the day.

Temperature Outlook

  • Friday: High of 15°C, mild with rain giving way to clearer skies overnight.
  • Saturday: High of 14°C, sunny and pleasant with gentle winds.
  • Sunday: Clear at first, rain expected later.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to follow updates from the Environment Agency and Met Office and to take precautions where necessary.

Gloucestershire communities are being urged to remain vigilant as the high tides approach.
