The Indian film and television industry is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished actors, Satish Shah, who passed away earlier today at the age of 74. The actor, best known for his iconic role in the cult sitcom Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, died due to kidney failure, according to early reports.

Shah was widely respected for his versatility across both television and cinema, having delivered memorable performances in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Main Hoon Na, and Kal Ho Naa Ho.

“Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor, Satish Shah, has expired a few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital, where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti. ” Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit

According to veteran filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, the actor fell seriously ill at home and was immediately taken to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. Sadly, he couldn’t be revived. Sharing the heartbreaking news via social media, Pandit expressed the immense loss felt by the industry.

He further stated in a video message: “I would like to share a sad news with you. Our friend, a great actor, Satish Shah, has passed away due to kidney failure.

His body will be brought to his residence in Bandra. I will keep you informed about his funeral. It is a huge loss for our industry.

I have worked a lot with Satish. Satish is a great man.”

Statement from His Long-Time PA

Ramesh Kadatala, who served as Satish Shah’s personal assistant for over three decades, also confirmed the news. He revealed that Shah passed away at his home in Bandra East.

“It seems he passed away from a heart attack; however, we are awaiting the final reports from the doctor about the reason behind his death,” he told PTI.

This leaves the possibility open that other complications may have been involved.

Known for his impeccable comic timing and unmatched screen presence, Satish Shah was a rare talent who bridged generations. From ’80s cinema to 2000s sitcoms, his work shaped the fabric of Indian entertainment.

A Career That Spanned Decades

Born on 25 June 1951, Shah built a legacy that spanned over four decades. He became a household name through the 1983 satirical cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, playing the now-famous character of corrupt Municipal Commissioner D’Mello.

The film also starred legends like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Pankaj Kapur. Shah also starred in numerous Bollywood hits, including:

  • Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000)
  • Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
  • Fanaa (2006)
  • Om Shanti Om (2007)
  • Humshakals (2014), where he played Mr Y.M. Raj, his last known appearance on the big screen

Educational & Personal Background

  • Shah hailed from a Kutchi Gujarati family in Mandvi
  • He studied at Xavier’s College, Mumbai
  • Later, he graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune
  • In 2015, he was appointed as a member of the FTII Society
  • He was married to designer Madhu Shah

Despite his fame, Shah kept a relatively low personal profile, often shying away from the limelight outside of his work.

His Last Post

In what now feels like a bittersweet farewell, Shah’s final social media post was a heartfelt birthday tribute to fellow actor Shammi Kapoor.

“Happy B’day, dearest Shammi ji. You are always around me,” he wrote, accompanied by a throwback photo featuring Kapoor and Govinda.

Satish Shah’s passing leaves a gaping void in Indian entertainment. He wasn’t just a comic genius – he was a cultural icon, a mentor, and a gentleman.

The funeral details are expected to be shared shortly. Friends, colleagues, and fans across the globe continue to pour in tributes, celebrating a man who made millions laugh and think.

Rest in peace, Satish Shah. You will be deeply missed.
