More than three decades after the mysterious disappearance and murder of 13-year-old Lindsay Rimer, police have arrested a man in connection with her death, reviving hopes of long-awaited justice.

Man arrested on suspicion of killing 13-year-old girl after 31 years

In a dramatic development, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed the arrest of a man suspected of murdering Lindsay, who went missing from Hebden Bridge in November 1994.

The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was detained on Monday morning at a UK prison, where he is currently serving time for unrelated offences.

The arrest marks a significant step forward in one of Yorkshire’s most haunting unsolved cases.

Last Seen Buying Cornflakes

Lindsay had left her family home to buy a box of cornflakes from a Spar supermarket on Crown Street. It was a regular errand. But she never returned.

At first, it was feared she had run away. That assumption was shattered months later when two canal workers made a grim discovery.

In April 1995, her body was recovered from Rawden Mill Lock on the Rochdale Canal, just a mile from where she vanished.

A Devastating Discovery That Shook a Community

The loss of Lindsay devastated the small market town of Hebden Bridge and gripped national attention. Despite extensive investigations, her killer remained at large for over 30 years until now.

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, who is leading the investigation, said: “We remain very firmly committed to doing everything we can to get justice for Lindsay, and to give her family the answers they still so desperately need after all these years.

The arrest we have made today comes as a result of our continued focus on progressing the investigation. We are keeping Lindsay’s family updated and, while we appreciate the understandable public interest that today’s arrest will bring, we do not anticipate any immediate developments at this stage.

Although it is now more than 30 years since Lindsay was murdered, we remain convinced there is someone out there who has vital information that could finally help to ease her family’s pain, and we urge them to do the right thing and tell us what they know.”

New Witnesses Approached

As part of renewed efforts, detectives have reportedly contacted several individuals from the Hebden Bridge and wider Halifax area. These potential witnesses were identified through the ongoing inquiry.

It is believed they may hold crucial details that could piece together the final hours of Lindsay’s life.

Investigation Ongoing

The suspect will be questioned over the course of two days, then returned to prison while further enquiries continue. The case remains open and active, with investigators urging the public not to assume the arrest means closure is near.

Anyone who may know something, no matter how minor it may seem, is being encouraged to come forward.

How to Help

If you have any information that could help the investigation, contact West Yorkshire Police by:

  • Calling 101 and quoting Operation Posemill
  • Texting or leaving a voicemail on 07707 147314

It’s been 31 long years since Lindsay Rimer’s life was cruelly taken. For her loved ones, the pain remains raw. But with this latest arrest, there is a glimmer of hope that answers may finally be within reach.

And perhaps, just perhaps, justice too.
