Philippines Earthquake: Powerful 7.6-Magnitude Tremor Rattles Mindanao, Tsunami Alerts Issued
A massive 7.6- magnitude earthquake struck off the southern seacoast of the Philippines late Friday, issuing rumbles and prompting residents to rush to safety in higher ground.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology( Phivolcs) verified that the earthquake’s epicentre was located off Manay city in Davao Oriental, within the Mindanao region, at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres.
Authorities have since issued strong advisories for residents to remain alert as foreshocks and implicit structural damage are anticipated.
“Residents living along coastal areas in Davao Oriental and nearby provinces are strongly advised to move further inland or seek higher ground,” said Phivolcs officials in an early advisory.
The unforeseen earthquake caused fear among littoral communities, with locals describing walls shaking violently and objects tumbling from shelves. Within twinkles, exigency enchantresses blazoned as original authorities ordered preventative evacuations.
While Phivolcs reported a 7.6 magnitude, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre( EMSC) listed the earthquake slightly lower, at 7.4 magnitude, being at a deeper 58 kilometres.

Despite the variation, both agencies agreed on one point: the earthquake’s strength was severe enough to induce riffle swells.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also released an alert, warning that dangerous riptide swells could impact areas within 300 km of the epicentre.
Phivolcs advised that surge heights might surpass one metre above normal runs within a two-hour window after the earthquake.
“Residents in coastal towns across central and southern Philippines were advised to move to higher ground or further inland as a precautionary measure,” Phivolcs reiterated.
As of now, there have been no verified casualties or major damage, but exigency brigades are conducting rapid-fire assessments across affected businesses.
Power dislocations and communication disruptions have been reported in several littoral areas.
The Philippine Red Cross has mobilised delivery brigades, and disaster services are on standby as authorities cover the situation.
The Philippines, sitting along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes.
The event comes only weeks after another deadly tremor hit the region, with reports of a rising death toll from a previous Philippines quake, underscoring the country’s vulnerability along the Pacific fault line.
Still, Friday’s tremor was among the strongest to hit the southern region in recent months, reviving memories of previous deadly quakes that struck Mindanao.
Locals have described the event as both sudden and terrifying. “It felt like the ground was breathing, it went on and on,” said one resident from Davao City.
While the original rifle warnings remain in place, authorities are expected to lift them gradually as the surge of exertion stabilises.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring that littoral residents are safe and that damage assessments are completed fleetly.
A 7.6- magnitude earthquake has shaken the southern Philippines, sparking riffle cautions, precautionary evacuations, and civil concern.
Though no casualties have been reported, authorities advise that foreshocks and implicit riffle swells may still pose pitfalls.
