A55 Traffic Chaos Near Holywell as Sheep Force Full Road Closure
Drivers on the A55 faced major disruption this morning after sheep strayed onto the busy dual carriageway near Holywell.
The stretch of road affected runs between Junction 31 at Caerwys and Junction 32 at Holywell. Both directions were shut while the animals were cleared from the carriageway, leaving motorists stuck in long delays.
Temporary traffic stops were brought in, but the closure sparked heavy queues as congestion quickly built up on surrounding routes.
Traffic Wales North and Mid confirmed at around 10am: “A55 remains closed in both directions at J32 Holywell. Heavy congestion on all approaches. Travel time is approximately 35 minutes.”

The incident caused frustration for commuters and holidaymakers alike, with tailbacks stretching for miles. Many drivers reported standstill traffic as police and highway crews worked to manage the situation safely.
While the sheep were eventually rounded up, the knock-on effects on A55 traffic are expected to last well into the day. Motorists are being urged to allow extra time for journeys or consider alternative routes where possible.
This disruption once again highlights how quickly travel along the A55, a vital route through North Wales, can grind to a halt when unexpected incidents occur.
