In a dramatic twist to Ireland’s upcoming presidential election, Mairead McGuinness has officially withdrawn from the race, citing health issues following a recent stay in hospital.
The former MEP and European Commissioner, long viewed as the leading contender to become Ireland’s next president, said the decision came after receiving medical advice.
With the election drawing close, McGuinness acknowledged the demanding nature of the campaign was simply too much under the current circumstances.
“It was a difficult decision, but one I know is right for me and my family.” In her official statement, Ms McGuinness confirmed she had informed Tánaiste and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris about her decision to step aside.
A Respected Figure Steps Away
Tánaiste Harris reacted to the news with visible surprise, describing the move as “an awful shock.” He went on to commend McGuinness for her “exceptional” contributions to public service—both in Ireland and across Europe.
Her track record in the EU Commission had positioned her as a strong, internationally respected candidate. Many saw this experience as a unique advantage, making her a serious favourite to secure the presidency.
Fine Gael Left Scrambling
Fine Gael’s Director of Elections, Minister Martin Heydon, confirmed that the party’s Executive Council would be meeting in the coming days to assess its next steps. While no replacement has yet been named, the party is expected to push forward in search of a new contender.
McGuinness had been the only officially nominated Fine Gael candidate to date, and her withdrawal has left a significant vacuum in the party’s strategy for the presidential campaign.
Who’s Still in the Running?
With McGuinness out, Independent TD Catherine Connolly remains the only confirmed candidate. Backed by Labour, the Social Democrats, and People Before Profit, Connolly is now the lone figure officially in the race, though new announcements are likely in the coming weeks.
Her unexpected departure changes the game entirely. Once a clear frontrunner with Brussels clout and national backing, Mairead McGuinness’ sudden exit from the presidential race has thrown Fine Gael into urgent regroup mode and may just have opened the door for a major upset.
As the political landscape shifts, eyes will now be on who steps up to fill the gap and whether Connolly can capitalise on the momentum. More updates are expected as Fine Gael deliberates its next move.
