Coney Beach Ride Accident: More Than a Dozen Injured in Welsh Amusement Park Incident
A day of seaside fun at one of South Wales’ most recognisable attractions turned into chaos after a ride at Coney Beach Amusement Park reportedly derailed, leaving more than a dozen people injured.
Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 6pm on Wednesday, 13 August, after reports of a serious incident at the busy summer fairground. Witnesses described a sudden commotion, flashing blue lights, and a rapid response from both police and fire crews.
Some of those caught up in the accident are believed to be children. South Wales Police quickly cordoned off the area and urged the public to stay clear.
A spokesperson for the force confirmed: “Officers and other emergency services are in attendance at Coney Beach Amusement Park, Porthcawl, Bridgend, following an accident involving one of the rides.
Please avoid the area to allow emergency services access. More updates will be made available when appropriate.”
Later, police revealed that more than twelve people had sustained injuries during the incident.
The park itself issued a separate statement, stressing that the ride involved was not one of its own but operated by a third party. In their message, they said: *”Due to an incident on a third-party ride not owned by Coney Beach, we were instructed by the police to clear the site for further investigation.
We apologise for the disruption and will be providing refunds to affected guests as soon as possible. We will be releasing instructions on refunds shortly. We thank you for your cooperation.”*
By early evening, the once-busy fairground was eerily quiet. Stalls stood empty. The smell of candyfloss still hung in the air. But the sound of laughter had been replaced with the hum of emergency generators and the crackle of radios.
Police investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the ride’s malfunction. The incident has raised renewed concerns over ride safety during the busy holiday season.
Locals say Coney Beach, a long-standing fixture in Porthcawl since the early 20th century, is usually a place of joy and nostalgia. On Wednesday night, however, it became the scene of one of the most serious fairground accidents the town has witnessed in recent years.
