Weather Forecast: Cooler Conditions Sweep the UK With Mixed Sunshine and Showers
A shift in the weather forecast is making itself known across the UK today, with cooler air taking hold and the sunshine now sharing space with scattered showers and a few thunderous surprises.
Tuesday marks a noticeable departure from the recent weather trend. Early rainfall across Shetland is expected to ease, while southern regions will enjoy some breaks of sunshine throughout the day.
But it’s not all clear skies. Central and northern areas will see a growing spread of showers as the morning progresses, some of which could turn heavy and even spark a few thunderstorms during the early afternoon.
“We start off Tuesday with further showers coming through on a north-westerly breeze. A blustery day for us all, but the strongest of the winds are pushing away into Scandinavia.
They’re slowly moderating through the day, although I suspect it will be a breezy day for all. And it’s going to be a showery day as well for many northern and western parts of the country.
Mostly sunny skies towards the south. Feeling cool in the breeze, but out of the breeze pleasant enough with temperatures reaching the low to mid-20s.
Further showers to come later Tuesday, but it does tend to calm down for a time with clearer skies and lighter winds,” said Aidan McGivern, Met Office presenter and meteorologist.
By late afternoon, the showers are forecast to ease from the west, paving the way for a drier and calmer end to the day for most. Temperatures are set to dip compared to Monday.
Southern and southeastern England might still enjoy highs in the low 20s Celsius, but for Scotland, it’s a different story.
Expect highs barely scraping the low teens – some 3 to 5°C below average. Winds won’t be as fierce as Monday’s, but blustery conditions will persist, particularly in exposed regions.
Tonight, a mostly dry spell is on the cards for much of the UK. Clear skies will dominate, though the far north, particularly northern Scotland, will stay under cloud cover, with occasional showers continuing to linger.
As skies clear elsewhere, the drop in temperatures will be noticeable. A cooler night awaits, although most will welcome the calm after the daytime gusts.
Outlook for Wednesday
Tomorrow starts off on a calmer note. Most regions will wake up to dry conditions, with any lingering showers in the far north expected to clear early on. Sunshine will appear again but may lose its sharpness later in the day as cloud begins to thicken from the west.
As the evening sets in, expect rain to move into northwestern parts of the UK, some of which could turn heavy. Winds in these regions will pick up too, particularly along the coasts, where gales might develop.
Further south and east, winds remain mild to moderate, and temperatures will sit around or slightly above what’s typical for this time of year.
Though the current weather forecast doesn’t bring heatwaves or severe storms, the change in tempo is a reminder that the British summer likes to keep us guessing. A day of layering up, dodging showers, and soaking in sunny intervals lies ahead.
