Victor Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Historic Start, A Roar That Echoed Years of Frustration

The roar said it all. After times of lapses and reconditioning, Victor Wembanyama let out a sonorous laugh on Thursday night, a sound that sounded to shake off seasons of despair for the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs edged past the Miami Heat with a 107 – 101 palm, claiming a ballot-first 5 – 0 start to the NBA season, commodity the formerly-dominant platoon had noway achieved in its 53- time history.

This was more than just a win. It was a rebirth.

“Tired of losing,” said guard Devin Vassell, reflecting the mood inside the Spurs’ locker room. “I’ve been here for a long time, and it’s been a journey. I can say that, but just tired of losing.”

That exhaustion is justified. The Spurs, one of the NBA’s most decorated teams with five championships and 22 consecutive playoff appearances, had fallen into unfamiliar territory in recent years.

They endured brutal stretches, a 16-game skid in 2023, only to surpass it the following season with 18 straight losses. In three years, they managed a dismal 78–168 record.

But this time, something feels different.

Leading this new era is Victor Wembanyama, the 21-year-old prodigy from France who has become the heart of this young Spurs team. Alongside nine teammates aged 25 or younger, Wembanyama is redefining what the franchise stands for.

“Feels good to be winning,” admitted Keldon Johnson, now in his seventh season. “Best feeling in the world.”

When the Spurs nearly let a 15-point lead slip, trailing 91–90 with six minutes left, it was Wembanyama who rallied the team, reminding everyone that this resurgence wasn’t luck.

“We didn’t get those five wins randomly,” Wembanyama said. “We worked for it. We started the season strong, and we keep that streak going for as long as possible.

It’s good to see results because we could be playing good and still not getting as many wins as we wish, but it’s good to have results and it’s pushing us.”

It wasn’t easy. Bam Adebayo battled fiercely, posting 31 points and 10 rebounds, testing Wembanyama on both ends of the floor.

“Thing is making him take uncomfortable shots, getting him out of his rhythm and doing that as a collective unit,” Adebayo said.

Despite Miami’s 17–1 run to open the fourth quarter, the Spurs dug deep. They closed the game on an 8–3 surge, clinching the milestone win.

“The Spurs made more plays down the stretch,” admitted Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “It was a heck of a game in those last three minutes.”

In the final seconds, after a hard foul by Andrew Wiggins, Wembanyama rose from the floor, motioning to the roaring San Antonio crowd to stand with him.

“It’s the exclamation point,” he said, and it truly was. For Spurs fans, that roar symbolized more than a single victory. It was a statement. A declaration that the future, led by Victor Wembanyama, has finally arrived.
