US Open 2025: Yuki Bhambri marches into historic semifinal with Michael Venus
History beckons at Flushing Meadows. Yuki Bhambri, India’s leading doubles star, is on the verge of a career-defining moment at the US Open 2025.
Partnering with New Zealand’s Michael Venus, the 33- time-old has stormed into his first-ever Grand Slam doubles semifinal.
The brace stunned 11th seeds Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram in straight sets 6- 3, 7- 6, 6- 3, under the lights on Court 17.
The palm transferred a ripple across the men’s doubles draw, italicizing the rise of a doubtful brace. Ranked 32nd in the world, Bhambri has long carried the weight of Indian expedients on his shoulders.
Until now, his stylish US Open result had been a pre-quarterfinal appearance in 2024, alongside Frenchman Albano Olivetti. But this semifinal vault has turned heads.
For Indian tennis, it’s a foggy to 2015. Back also, Leander Paes lifted the mixed doubles crown, while Sania Mirza claimed the women’s doubles title. Since also, silence. Bhambri now has the chance to end that decade-long failure.
Speaking about his journey, Bhambri reflected: “It is every person’s dream when they hold a tennis racket. When you go out there, that is what you want to do. This is what you have seen on TV.
My idols growing up were Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. You see them do it. That is one of the reasons why I picked up a tennis racket, watching them win the US Open, watching them win Wimbledon.”

“When you go out there, winning a Grand Slam is obviously a dream to accomplish. That is what all of us out there are trying to do. We are putting our best foot forward and hope one day we can achieve that.”
The semifinal is far from a formality. Bhambri and Venus must now outmanoeuvre Britain’s Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury, one of the home favourites. The clash is scheduled for Friday, a high-stakes encounter that promises fireworks.
While Bhambri shines, other Indian hopefuls have faltered. Veteran Rohan Bopanna, aged 44, bowed out early with Monaco’s Romain Arneodo.
Arjun Kadhe and Ecuador’s Diego Hidalgo faced a similar fate in round one. Meanwhile, Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth lost their opener to Brazil’s Fernando Romboli and Australia’s John-Patrick Smith.
For Bhambri, this run is about more than just numbers. It’s about legacy. About placing India back on the doubles map at one of tennis’s most prestigious stages.
About proving that dreams nurtured by watching Sampras and Agassi on TV can one day unfold on the same courts.
