Pakistan Earthquakes: Strong Tremors Shake Islamabad and Northern Cities
A powerful earthquake shook Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, and several northern cities late on Sunday, sparking panic across the region.
The quake, recorded at magnitude 6 on the Richter scale, struck suddenly, forcing people out of their homes. Many rushed into open spaces as buildings shook violently.
“Windows rattled, and furniture shook,” residents described. Scenes of fear unfolded in Peshawar, Mardan, Murree, and surrounding districts, with thousands jolted awake by the tremors.
The tremor was felt across much of northern Pakistan. Families gathered in the streets, many barefoot, holding children in their arms. Some areas experienced power cuts. Social media filled quickly with footage of people huddling outdoors.
Despite the strength of the quake, officials confirmed there were no immediate reports of casualties or large-scale damage. Rescue teams were swiftly dispatched to assess vulnerable areas, while hospitals were put on alert as a precaution.

Local authorities urged citizens to remain alert. “People have been advised to remain cautious and avoid staying in unsafe buildings,” officials stated. Rescue workers continued inspections through the night.
Pakistan sits on a seismically active fault line and has endured devastating quakes in the past. The memory of the deadly 2005 Kashmir earthquake still lingers in public consciousness. Each tremor brings a reminder of the country’s vulnerability.
For now, Islamabad and nearby cities appear to have been spared major destruction. Yet, the anxiety left by Sunday’s tremors is palpable, with many too frightened to return indoors immediately.
