‘ Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 22 Cast Updates: Only Two verified Returns So Far
Suckers of Grey’s Anatomy are gearing up for season 22, which premieres on 9 October. But the long-running ABC drama is bringing questions along with excitement.
Following the explosive homestretch of season 21, only two cast members are verified to return, though interposers suggest several others formerly had contracts in place.
Showrunner Meg Marinis spoke about the forthcoming season in a post-finale interview. While she could only officially confirm two returns, she offered some hints about what observers can anticipate.
Verified Cast: Ellen Pompeo and Jason George
Ellen Pompeo, who plays the iconic Meredith Grey, continues her reduced part trend since season 20. Yet she remains central to the story.
Deadline reports that Ellen will continue as executive producer in season 22, and she’s “expected” to appear again as Meredith Grey.
Marinis also reassured fans: Meredith survived the season 21 explosion.
Jason George, portraying Dr. Ben Warren, is another confirmed survivor. He narrowly escaped the blast, though his character faces professional and emotional turmoil next season.
“We did see Warren running back into the building [from outside]. We saw Jo outside the building, but we didn’t see her leave, so it just depends on what exit she took, I guess,” Meg told THR.
She also told Variety, “He was outside the hospital when that explosion went off, so we know he’s alive. But he doesn’t have a job, so he’s going through an emotional explosion.
What we wanted to see for him coming back was that it wasn’t going to be as easy as he assumed, and also the difficulty of having to work side-by-side with your wife, who is in a position of authority over you.
I think they were able to navigate that fairly well. There were a few bumps in the road, but we wanted to tell a story where Ben did not want to ask for special treatment from Bailey.”
Other Cast Members with Deals in Place
Several original and fan-favourite characters have contracts for season 22, though their fates after the explosion remain uncertain:
- Chandra Wilson – Miranda Bailey
- James Pickens Jr. – Richard Webber
- Kevin McKidd – Owen Hunt
- Kim Raver – Teddy Altman
- Camilla Luddington – Jo Wilson
- Caterina Scorsone – Amelia Shepherd
All are expected to return. However, it is still unclear whether their characters survived the dramatic season 21 finale.
Trevor Jackson, previously of grown-ish, joins the series in a potentially recurring role. His character is described as “handsome, intelligent, but arrogant,” and recently appeared in the penultimate episode of season 21.
“You’ll find out his name next season,” Meg revealed to Variety.
Scott Speedman, who plays Nick Marsh, is also likely to return. Despite being cast in a new ABC pilot, sources confirm this won’t prevent his Grey’s Anatomy appearance.
With the premiere date moved up and so many unresolved plotlines, the upcoming season promises high stakes. From explosions to new relationships, fans can expect the unexpected at Grey Sloan Memorial.
