Gardaí have confirmed the arrest of a man in his 60s in connection with the Annie McCarrick murder case, more than three decades after her disappearance.

Annie, a 26-year-old American woman living in Dublin, was last seen on 26 March 1993. She had recently settled in Sandymount after relocating to Ireland from New York. Her sudden disappearance sparked one of Ireland’s most haunting unsolved cases.

The suspect was arrested in Dublin earlier this morning, according to a statement from Gardaí. He is currently being questioned.

As part of the revived investigation, authorities are conducting a forensic search of a property in Clondalkin, west Dublin.

“Elements of that house and garden will be searched and subject of both technical and forensic examinations,” confirmed Gardaí.

They were keen to stress that: “The current residents of this home are not connected in any way with Annie McCarrick or her disappearance.”

Annie McCarrick arrived in Ireland in January 1993. She had Irish roots and was eager to embrace her heritage. Settling in Dublin 4, she took up roles as a waitress at both the Courtyard Restaurant in Donnybrook and Café Java on Leeson Street.

On the morning of her disappearance, she was seen purchasing groceries at Quinnsworth on Sandymount Road. Those items were later found still in their bags in her flat, unpacked and untouched.

An Garda Síochána confirmed that Annie’s family in the US have been informed of the recent developments.

“They have been fully apprised of today’s developments,” said a Garda spokesperson.

Authorities are now urging anyone with knowledge of the Annie McCarrick murder case—no matter how minor it may seem—to come forward.

“An Garda Síochána appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small or insignificant that they might believe it to be, to contact the investigation team,” they stated.

“With the passage of time they may now be in a position to speak further with the investigation team. Any information will be welcomed by the investigation team and will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Those wishing to assist the investigation are encouraged to get in touch:

  • Irishtown Garda Station: 01 666 9600
  • Garda Confidential Line: 1800 666 111

The arrest reignites hope that answers may finally come to light in the Annie McCarrick murder case. For over 30 years, her disappearance has remained a painful mystery for both her family and the Irish public. As the investigation intensifies, Gardaí remain determined to uncover the truth.
