A tragic accident at a level crossing has claimed the life of an Amazon delivery driver after a van was struck by a train on Sunday afternoon.
The collision occurred around 12:45 BST on Lower Road in Teynham, according to Kent Police. Emergency services, including police, ambulance crews, and fire personnel, rushed to the scene, but the driver sadly died at the site of the crash.
The van was hit by a Southeastern train, prompting an immediate halt to rail services between Gillingham and Faversham.
No other injuries were reported, confirmed David Davidson, Chief Operating Officer at Southeastern.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that the driver of the road vehicle involved in the collision with a train earlier today has tragically died. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” said Mr Davidson.
Passengers onboard the affected train were safely transferred to another service and taken to Sittingbourne to continue their journeys.
Southeastern has expressed its sorrow following the incident. The company stated it was “deeply saddened and extended condolences to the delivery driver’s family at this incredibly difficult time”.
An Amazon spokesperson also shared their sympathies: “This is a terrible incident, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the delivery driver’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We will work with police and the delivery service provider as they investigate.”
Southeastern’s Managing Director, Steve White, confirmed the operator is working closely with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).
He said the company is “fully assisting the Rail Accident Investigation Branch with their investigation to understand exactly what happened”. Efforts are underway to reopen the railway line, with Southeastern aiming to resume full services by Monday.
