London Gatwick: Passengers Face Delays Amid Major Developments and New Routes
Travellers passing through London Gatwick today (Friday, 11 July) are experiencing some disruption, as a few scheduled flights have been delayed. The situation remains fluid, though officials have confirmed that no arriving flights have been cancelled so far.
So far, there have been several delayed departures. Among them:
- easyJet EZY8707 to Marrakech, originally set for 7.30am, is now expected at 8.45am.
- easyJet EZY8223 to Chania, due to leave at 8am, has also been pushed back to 8.45am.
- easyJet EJU8403 to Paris has been delayed from 8am to 8.25am.
Travellers are encouraged to check the Gatwick Airport flight board for live updates.
Despite the disruptions, London Gatwick has had a busy and optimistic start to July. Big announcements and achievements have come thick and fast, bolstering the airport’s standing both at home and abroad.
A major milestone came with the introduction of a new direct service from Gatwick to Nairobi.
“This route is the only non-stop connection between London Gatwick and the Kenyan capital.”
The new service, operated by Kenya Airways, launched on Thursday, 3 July. It marks a key expansion in Gatwick’s African route network and reflects increasing demand for direct links between the UK and East Africa.
A recent overhaul of Gatwick’s security process is winning over passengers. No more hassle with plastic bags or removing laptops at the scanners.
“They no longer need to remove electrical items or place liquids in plastic bags, as part of a multi-million-pound project to transform its security screening process.”
The streamlined system is part of a broader investment into modernising the passenger experience, which includes improved screening tech and a faster flow through checkpoints.
Route expansions continue to be a priority. Norwegian has revealed a new flight to Western Denmark, while Wizz Air is now flying to Wrocław, Poland — a destination hailed as one of Europe’s “hidden gems.”
“Flights to Wrocław, Poland will be operated four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.”
Additionally, the Norwegian route includes a delightful perk — children flying from the UK to Denmark will receive free entry to a nearby Legoland resort.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has signalled positive momentum for long-debated plans to construct a second runway.
“Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is ‘minded to approve’ plans for a second runway at London Gatwick, providing measures to reduce noise are put in place.”
The proposal, long supported by Gatwick’s leadership, could pave the way for a significant increase in flight capacity and help relieve congestion.
There’s more good news on the financial front. Interim results show a 7.7% increase in passengers, with revenue hitting £488 million. The airport credits this performance to strong collaboration and the dedication of its frontline teams.
In another win, Gatwick became the first UK airport to earn Level 1 Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation from Airports Council International.
“The accreditation recognises London Gatwick’s commitment to accessibility services through its strategy, policies, and initiatives.”
And in a step towards sustainability, the airport has slashed emissions from diesel vehicles by 90% by switching to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
“The switch means London Gatwick will save more than 950 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum.”
With route expansions, green innovation, and glowing financials, London Gatwick is clearly on the move — even if today’s early flight delays offered a brief pause.
As the summer holiday season ramps up, the airport’s ambitions show no sign of slowing. For now, passengers are advised to stay updated, stay patient — and perhaps plan a little extra time before heading to the terminal.
