Seaside Village Near London Named Among UK’s Best Beaches for Seafood & History

Seaside Village Gem Just Two Hours from London Boasts One of the UK’s Top Beaches

Tucked away on the Hampshire coast, a seaside village called Milford-on-Sea is quietly earning its stripes as one of the UK’s most stunning beach destinations.

A far cry from the crowded tourist traps, this peaceful spot offers something unique — the rare blend of coastal charm and countryside calm. It’s perched on the edge of the famous New Forest, but instead of trees, you’re treated to sweeping sea views, pebble beaches, and the distant shimmer of the Isle of Wight.

It’s no longer just a local secret. The Times has recently named Milford-on-Sea’s beach — or more accurately, its four beaches — among the best in the country.

Quaint yet full of character, this village wraps itself around a lively food scene, historic sites, and miles of unspoilt coastline. It’s not hard to see why it’s catching the attention of beach lovers and weekenders alike.

At the heart of its culinary draw is Verveine, a standout seafood restaurant that’s as much about experience as it is about flavour. The fine-dining venue, which includes an on-site fishmonger, offers an eight-course tasting menu crafted by expert fishmonger Adrian Blake, who brings more than 25 years of experience to the table.

In 2015, The Times likened the atmosphere to “more like The Clash, less like Pink Floyd.” The Michelin guide chimed in too, praising the food as “accurate, original and bursting with flavour” — with bread baked twice daily.

For those after a more casual setting, Milford doesn’t disappoint. The Smugglers pub offers hearty meals in a warm, welcoming setting, while The Wash House microbrewery rotates its taps with craft creations and classic ales.

And then there’s the scenery. Long shingle stretches invite relaxed strolls or ice cream stops at the nearby café. A cliff-top walk reveals breathtaking views, while birdwatchers and ramblers will feel at home exploring the nature reserve that surrounds the village.

One unmissable landmark? Hurst Castle. Built by Henry VIII, this coastal fortress remains a formidable presence. Accessible via a scenic spit and ferry combo, entry costs just £8. The site offers not only a slice of history but also panoramic views across the Solent.

Whether you’re in it for the food, the views, or just to escape the city grind, Milford-on-Sea offers a slice of serenity — all within a two-hour train ride from London Waterloo, or a relaxed two-and-a-half-hour drive.

This seaside village might just be the best British beach break you haven’t heard of — yet.
