Manchester United have officially confirmed Jonny Evans’s appointment as Head of Loans and Pathways, marking a significant step in the club’s ongoing efforts to nurture and elevate young talent.

The move signals the formal conclusion of Evans’s decorated playing career. With his UEFA A Licence nearly complete, the Northern Irishman is now set to guide the next generation of United stars.

He will collaborate closely with Director of Football Jason Wilcox and the club’s Academy leadership, aiming to refine developmental pathways and ensure young players are primed for first-team action.

This career pivot comes after a remarkable on-pitch journey. An Academy product himself, Evans featured 241 times in two spells at Old Trafford. His honours list is glittering: a Champions League medal, three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.

Across all competitions and clubs, Evans amassed 536 senior appearances. Internationally, he represented Northern Ireland 107 times and was honoured with an MBE in 2023 for his contribution to football.

In his own words, Evans confirmed the shift: “I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead.

I’ll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football.

My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It’s been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support.

I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential. Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player’s development.

I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.”

Jason Wilcox, United’s Director of Football, expressed his full confidence in Evans: “Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players.

Jonny’s knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.”

Evans’s blend of experience, insight, and deep ties to the club make him uniquely positioned to influence United’s future on and off the pitch. His journey now continues from the sidelines, mentoring those hoping to follow in his formidable footsteps.
