Londoners are being urged to prepare for sweltering conditions as the Met Office warns of potentially the hottest days of the year. Temperatures are forecast to soar to a staggering 35°C early next week, with the capital at the heart of the second heatwave this June.
While highs of 34°C are currently predicted for both Monday and Tuesday (June 30 and July 1), forecasters have indicated that thermometers could creep even higher.
Tuesday Could See Peak Heat
According to the Met Office, Tuesday stands a good chance of becoming the hottest day of the year so far.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lenhert, stated: “Overnight temperatures will remain high, with some locations not dropping below 20°C in what is called a tropical night.
These sorts of temperatures make it hard to sleep and prevent any recovery from the high daytime temperatures too.
Tuesday will be another hot day, though the highest temperatures will be more confined to the south-east of England, where 35°C is possible.
Fresher air will move in from the west through the middle of the week, bringing an end to this heatwave.”
In the capital, the heat won’t let up overnight either, with Monday night temperatures unlikely to fall below 22°C. By Tuesday, London could hit the 35°C mark, according to updated forecasts.
Experts warn that such high night-time temperatures can significantly affect human health. The body depends on cooler evenings to reset and recover from daytime heat stress.
Without this drop, the risks of heat exhaustion and related conditions escalate.
Cooler Air Expected Midweek
Relief is in sight, though. Tuesday is expected to mark the peak of the extreme temperatures, as fresher air moves in from the west by midweek.
Despite the temperature drop, conditions will still feel warm in London, with highs gradually dipping from 28°C on Wednesday to around 24°C by Sunday.
Climate Change and Shifting Heat Patterns
Scientists at World Weather Attribution link the recurring heatwaves to climate change. June, historically the coolest summer month, is now seeing more frequent temperature spikes. They reported that:
- Before the Industrial Revolution, June heatwaves (above 28°C for three consecutive days) were rare, occurring once every 50 years.
- In today’s climate, such events are happening roughly every five years.
- June 2025 alone has already seen two heatwaves.
