A street in St Helens was evacuated on Tuesday after police investigating a man’s death discovered what they described as unexploded ordnance inside his home.

Officers were called to Chadwick Street on Monday (23 June), following the non-suspicious death of a man in his 60s. During a routine visit, they stumbled upon a hazardous device.

A follow-up search revealed several more explosives, prompting the evacuation of the neighbourhood.

  • Police initially responded to the death, describing it as non-suspicious.
  • On 24 June, during a detailed search, they found one unexploded device and later uncovered more.
  • A cordon was established and maintained overnight for public safety.

Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units were summoned to the scene. A spokesperson from Merseyside Police remarked: “We can confirm a cordon is due to remain in place in St Helens overnight following the discovery of an unexploded ordnance inside a house today (Tuesday 24 June).”

The EOD officers donned combat fatigues, inspected the devices, and are planning controlled detonations to eliminate the threat.

Community safety measures were swiftly put in place. Residents were offered shelter and assistance at the Chain Lane Community Centre. Emergency vehicles, including at least two ambulances, were stationed nearby to support any immediate medical needs.

This incident echoes a similar case in Eastbourne, where, on 23 June, residents from six streets were evacuated after a bomb disposal team investigated a suspicious liquid contained in a bottle‑sized container. The device was safely detonated, and no casualties were reported.

Authorities continue to examine the origin of these devices and the circumstances surrounding the deceased man. Local officers urge residents to report any unusual findings to ensure public safety.
