A 19-year-old cyclist has tragically died after being hit by a van in Dublin.

The fatal incident occurred early yesterday morning, around 7:30am, at a busy junction in Lucan – specifically at the intersection of Griffeen Avenue, R136, and Balgaddy Road.

The teenage cyclist, who has not yet been publicly named, was treated at the scene before being rushed to Tallaght Hospital. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries.

No other injuries were reported in the collision, and the driver of the van remained at the scene.

Authorities are now calling on the public to assist in their investigation into the crash. Gardaí are urging any road users who may have been in the area at the time to review their dash-cam or mobile footage.

“Road users who may have relevant camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí,” they stated.

Anyone with information is urged to get in touch with Lucan Garda Station on (01) 666 7300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station nationwide.

The tragic loss of the young man has sent shockwaves through the local community. Lucan residents described the junction as a busy and often hazardous area during peak hours.

The stretch of road where the collision took place is frequently used by cyclists and commuters, and there have been renewed calls for improved safety measures in the area. Campaigners have highlighted the need for clearer lane markings and dedicated cycle paths.

  • Victim: 19-year-old male cyclist
