In a weekend that has left London’s Jewish community on high alert, the Metropolitan Police have arrested two suspects in connection with an attempted arson attack at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, is being treated as a major hate crime, with counter-terrorism officers now investigating whether a series of recent attacks across the capital are the work of Iranian-backed proxies.

The arrests of a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man come amid what the Chief Rabbi has described as a “sustained campaign of violence” targeting Jewish institutions, including schools, charities, and places of worship.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan have both condemned the attacks, promising that those responsible will face the “full force of the law.”

How did the Kenton Synagogue attack unfold?

The attempted arson at Kenton United Synagogue was discovered by patrolling officers shortly before midnight on Saturday.

According to reports from the Community Security Trust (CST), a bottle containing an accelerant, described as a “fire-bomb”, was thrown through a window of the building.

Fortunately, the device failed to fully ignite the interior. The fire caused minor smoke damage to an internal room, and no injuries were reported. London Fire Brigade crews were on the scene within minutes to ensure the structure was safe.

This attack marks the third such incident in a single week, following a chilling pattern of escalation across North London.

Where exactly are these attacks taking place?

The recent wave of incidents has been concentrated in the heart of London’s Jewish community, specifically within the boroughs of Harrow and Barnet.

  • Kenton United Synagogue (Harrow): The site of the latest attack, situated in a residential suburb close to local schools.
  • Hendon: On Friday night, a building formerly housing the Jewish Futures charity was targeted with a similar incendiary device.
  • Finchley: Earlier last week, Finchley Reform Synagogue was targeted by two suspects who hurled petrol-filled bottles at the premises.
  • Golders Green: This follows a significant attack last month where four ambulances belonging to the Hatzola Jewish volunteer emergency service were torched, causing explosions that forced local evacuations.

Is there evidence of foreign state interference?

A critical development in this investigation is the potential link to Iran. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the Senior National Co-ordinator for Counter-Terrorism Policing, confirmed that officers are investigating claims made online by a group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI).

“We are aware of public reporting that suggests this group may have links to Iran. We will continue to explore that question as our investigation evolves.

I’ve spoken previously about the Iranian regime’s use of criminal proxies, and we are considering whether this tactic is being used here in London.”

Security analysts suggest that Iran may be utilizing “criminal proxies”, local individuals hired to carry out attacks, to create plausible deniability while sowing domestic discord.

How are UK authorities and community leaders responding?

The gravity of the situation has prompted high-level responses from the UK’s leading security and political figures:

  • The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stated, “Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain. We will not rest in the pursuit of the perpetrators.”
  • The Chief Rabbi: Sir Ephraim Mirvis warned that the campaign of “violence and intimidation” is gathering momentum, urging the public to understand “how dangerous this moment is for all of our society.”

We will not be deterred! Despite last night’s attack on Kenton United Synagogue, the community came together this morning for a well-attended shacharit service at a different location. Their rabbi, Rabbi Yehuda Black, had this message to share. pic.twitter.com/YmYRhd9bvv

  • The Metropolitan Police: An additional 264 officers, including specialist firearms and drone units, have been deployed to patrol Jewish neighborhoods, schools, and synagogues.

What is the immediate impact on London residents?

The surge in attacks has significantly altered daily life for residents in North-West London:

  1. Heightened Surveillance: Increased police presence and 24-hour manned security at communal buildings have become the new norm in Golders Green and Hendon.
  2. Psychological Toll: Local schools have issued safety briefings to parents, advising on increased vigilance during drop-off and pick-up times.
  3. Transport Disruptions: Forensic cordons at Kenton and Hendon have led to temporary road closures, affecting local commuters.
  4. Community Defense: The Community Security Trust (CST) has reported a surge in volunteers and a record 3,700 antisemitic incidents in the UK over the past year.

What happens next in the counter-terrorism investigation?

The investigation has now shifted into a broader national security probe. The National Security Act is being used to examine whether these acts constitute state-sponsored sabotage.

  • Forensic Analysis: Evidence recovered from the Kenton and Hendon scenes, including the fire-bomb components, is undergoing detailed analysis by counter-terrorism labs.
  • Diplomatic Pressure: The Foreign Office is expected to review diplomatic channels with Tehran if a direct link is proven.
  • Legal Action: The two suspects arrested on Monday remain in custody. Charges related to arson with intent to endanger life and racially aggravated property damage are anticipated.
