The United Kingdom is set to change the way transnational travellers enter the country. Starting February 25, 2026, callers from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and France, will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving.
This new digital concurrence aims to enhance UK border security, streamline entry for tourists, and make the overall immigration process more effective.
For many, this is a big shift. Until now, citizens from these countries have enjoyed visa-free access for short passages. From 2026, trippers
will need to gain an ETA or eVisa for stays of over six months.
Nationals from India, who already require a visa, are unaffected. UK and Irish citizens, as well as dual nationals, are also exempt.

The UK Home Office promises a straightforward system. Applications for the ETA can be submitted through the official UK ETA app on Android or iOS.
The cost is £16, and most decisions are issued within minutes. Travellers should allow up to three working days if extra checks are needed.
