Residers across northern Israel were left shaken on Wednesday morning as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Paphos, Cyprus.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake hit at 1131 a.m., causing a tremor that could be felt in metropolises including Haifa, Tiberias, and Nazareth.
Tremors Felt Across Israel
In Safed, locals reported the earthquake was strong enough to move kitchen tables, with one occupant saying, “The whole room shook, it was quite a surprise!” Despite the agitating experience, there have been no reported injuries or structural damage, officers verified.
This Cyprus earthquake comes just six months after a more significant earthquake of 6.2 magnitude near the Greece-Turkey border was felt in Israel.
While Wednesday’s earthquake was milder, experts remind residents to stay on alert for foreshocks and other seismic activity in the region.
Cyprus Seismic Activity and Regional Impact
Seismologists note that earthquakes in Cyprus aren’t uncommon, given the islet’s position along the Eastern Mediterranean fault lines.

The earthquake’s impact across northern Israel demonstrates how seismic swells can travel significant distances, making distant shakes conspicuous to original communities.
For those living in earthquake-prone areas, it’s a timely reminder to check emergency supplies, secure heavy furniture, and stay informed through official authorities.
While this event caused no immediate peril, it highlights the significance of earthquake mindfulness in both Cyprus and neighbouring regions.
