A set of human bones has been discovered on one of Devon’s most scenic and well-loved beaches, prompting an urgent police investigation.
Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to the scene at Saunton Sands at around 2.50pm on Saturday, 11 October. The beach, nestled along the North Devon coast near Braunton, is a hotspot for surfers and families alike, making the find all the more shocking.
The bones, discovered by a member of the public, have since triggered a forensic investigation. A police cordon remains in place while officers continue to examine the area.
“Officers were called at 2.50pm on Saturday, 11 October, following the discovery of human bones at Saunton Sands beach. A scene guard remains in place while the items are recovered.
These will be examined by a forensic archaeologist to determine their age. Police enquiries are ongoing,” a police statement reads.
Forensic Experts Called In
In a bid to identify the origin of the remains, detectives have called in a forensic archaeologist. Their task will be to examine the bones and try to establish whether they are ancient or from a more recent death.
The outcome of this analysis could steer the investigation in an entirely different direction, from a historical discovery to a possible criminal case.
Saunton Sands, with its vast golden stretch and striking dunes, has featured in several films and TV shows. The beach is not only a favourite among surfers but also regularly attracts fossil hunters and metal detectorists.
Local Reaction and Ongoing Enquiries
Locals expressed concern and curiosity following the discovery, as rumours swirled about the possible origins of the remains.
Some have speculated whether coastal erosion may have played a role in unearthing them, especially given the region’s shifting sands and high tidal movements.
Despite the unusual and potentially grim nature of the find, police have stressed that no conclusions can be drawn until the bones have been thoroughly examined.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the remains belong to a single individual or multiple people, nor whether foul play is suspected.
Police Continue to Guard the Scene
Officers are expected to remain at the location while recovery efforts continue. Beachgoers are being asked to avoid the cordoned-off area while investigations are underway.
As one of the busiest beaches in North Devon, any disruption to Saunton Sands draws immediate attention, and the presence of human remains has now turned a peaceful coastal spot into a scene of intense scrutiny. The community, and no doubt the nation, now waits for answers.
