In a bold and brilliant twist, Greggs is set to pull its first pint this weekend with the launch of its very first pub, The Golden Flake Tavern, right in the heart of Newcastle.
The North East bakery favourite, known for fuelling the nation with sausage rolls and steak bakes, is teaming up once again with Fenwick department store to open the doors to a distinctly Greggs-style British pub.
Greggs to open first-ever pub in Newcastle department store
Opening Saturday, 27th September, the tavern promises a hearty mash-up of comfort food, pints, and playful nostalgia.
Nestled inside Fenwick on Northumberland Street, the new pub will serve up not only Greggs’ classics, but also a full pub menu with a Greggs twist. From a chicken bake Parmo to a steak bake mixed grill, it’s unapologetically British and unmistakably Greggs.
And yes, there will be booze. Two exclusive beers have been brewed in collaboration with Newcastle-based Full Circle Brew Co:
- Pink Jammie Pale Ale
- Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager
There’s even a line-up of Greggs-themed cocktails on the drinks list.
Menu Highlights You Didn’t Know You Needed
The menu, which reads like a dream for any Greggs devotee, includes:
- Sausage roll & mash
- Greggs’ ploughman’s platter
- Yum yum bread & butter pudding
- Pink jammie trifle think doughnuts in jelly, topped with jam, custard and whipped cream
And the pièce de résistance?
A Sunday carvery with a twist, choose between a steak bake, chicken bake, or cheese & onion bake as the centrepiece of your roast. Trimmings include Yorkshire puds, cauliflower cheese, and crisp roasties.
More Than Just a Pub – It’s a Cultural Nudge
The Golden Flake Tavern is not just a pub — it’s a love letter to British food culture, reimagined by two iconic North East brands.
It’s also a refreshing addition to the country’s evolving pub scene. From traditional taprooms to unique hybrids like this, venues are redefining what it means to head to the local.
Across the UK, cities have embraced this blend of nostalgia and novelty — much like the standout pubs across London, which continue to offer some of the most distinct and character-rich drinking spots in the country.
Weekly Quiz Nights & Limited-Time Pop-Up
The pub will seat up to 88 guests and is taking bookings from midday this Thursday, though walk-ins will be accepted. A weekly quiz night kicks off from 7th October – £5 per team (up to six people).
But don’t hang around, the pop-up pub is only around until 15th February 2026.
Third Time’s the Charm for Greggs and Fenwick
This is the third creative link-up between Greggs and Fenwick:
- In 2023, they launched Bistro Greggs, serving a multi-course fine-dining experience.
- In early 2024, they unveiled the Greggs Champagne Bar, where over 8,000 visitors enjoyed sausage rolls with fizz.
“Following the reaction and success of our previous collaborations with Fenwick Bistro by Greggs in 2023 and the Greggs Champagne Bar last year, we’re thrilled to be launching our third landmark venture together.
The Golden Flake Tavern brings a fresh twist to the traditional British pub experience, and we hope everyone who joined us before, along with many new faces, will come along to enjoy this unique Greggs experience,” said Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs.
Leo Fenwick, Fenwick’s strategic partnerships director, added: “This latest collaboration celebrates the best of both brands, pairing Greggs’ much-loved classics with our own distinctive approach to creating memorable in-store experiences.”
“As two North East icons, we’re proud to work together again in offering customers something playful, surprising and truly unique in the heart of Newcastle.”
This collaboration is more than just sausage rolls and pints; it’s a savvy blend of heritage, humour, and innovation.
With Greggs stepping beyond the bakery counter and into British pub culture, the move showcases how beloved high street brands are pushing the boundaries of traditional retail experiences.
Expect queues. Expect cameras. And expect a whole lot of people raising a glass – and a sausage roll – to something deliciously different in Newcastle.
