As Britain prepares for the final bank holiday of summer 2025, many are already planning how to make the most of the long weekend. With schools, government offices and banks set to shut on Monday, 25 August, most major retailers are adjusting their trading hours—some trimming down their schedules for the day.

Whether you’re firing up the barbecue, hosting friends or just topping up the essentials, it’s worth checking your local supermarket’s opening times before heading out.

Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your bank holiday grocery run. Need to pop to the shops this bank holiday? Don’t get caught out. Here’s when your local supermarket is open across the UK.

Aldi

Aldi stores across England and Wales will be operating reduced hours, opening from 8am to 8pm. However, shoppers in Scotland will notice no change, with stores sticking to their usual 10pm closing. Check here to find opening hours for your local Aldi.

Asda

Asda’s opening hours will be fairly standard for most locations, with doors open from 8am to 10pm. That said, there might be regional differences, so it’s wise to double-check using Asda’s [store finder].

Co-op

Co-op has confirmed it’ll be business as usual for most of its stores. “Co-op said its stores will open as usual on the August bank holiday Monday to keep serving communities conveniently.” Most of their convenience stores operate from 7am to 10pm, but opening times may vary depending on location.

Lidl

Lidl customers can expect shortened hours for the bank holiday, although times differ from store to store. For a smoother experience, avoid the Friday rush, which is tipped to be especially hectic. Lidl recommends shopping before 10am or after 6pm. Use their [online store finder] to stay informed.

Morrisons

Morrisons supermarkets in England and Wales will open earlier but close at 8pm instead of the usual late-night hours. In Scotland, most branches will stick to normal hours.

Marks & Spencer (M&S)

Some M&S branches will open later and shut earlier on Monday. Exact hours vary by location, so customers are encouraged to confirm timings using the [official store checker].

Sainsbury’s

Shoppers heading to larger Sainsbury’s stores should plan for an 8pm closing time on Monday. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s Local stores will operate until 11pm as usual. Opening hours can vary across the country, and customers can find details for their nearest Sainsbury’s here.

Tesco

Tesco’s larger superstores will open at 8am and shut by 6pm on the bank holiday. However, Tesco Express outlets are expected to remain open into the late evening, providing more flexibility.

Use the Tesco [store locator] to find your local store’s hours.

Waitrose

Expect a mixed schedule across Waitrose branches. Some Little Waitrose outlets will trade from 7am to 10pm, while others may differ significantly depending on the area.

Check your closest branch’s hours on the Waitrose [website].

Don’t leave your shopping too late many supermarkets are closing earlier than normal, and Friday is expected to be unusually busy. Whether you’re planning a picnic, BBQ, or just staying in, it’s a good idea to get your essentials sorted early. Stay ahead of the rush, and enjoy your bank holiday!
